EXHAUST MANIFOLDS
As exhaust manifolds are used, the continuous process of hot-cold-hot-cold cycling wears away the metal.
At first the result is discoloration, but sooner or later a new manifold or expensive repairing is required. Modern technology that has solved the problem of burned-out headers is the metallic-ceramic coatings, that have come from the aircraft world.
This coatings not only keeps exhaust manifold looking new for years, but also protects them from thermal fatigues and gives benefit from a performance standpoint.
The coating process start with cleaning. Before the coating can be applied the manifold must be completely free of any contaminants.
Hipeco thermally degreases the part at 250 oC then blast it.
Next step is spraying them with an aluminium base. The base is an aluminium ceramic coating which is excellent thermalbarrier and gives tremendous corrosion protection ( succesfully passed US Army 4000 hour salt spray test) On top of the aluminium ceramic base is a ceramic envelope available in five colors:white, aluminium, cast iron, titanium, black satin. This ceramic isn’t the conventional ,brittle ceramic that usually comes to mind. It’s much tougher and won’t crack or flake off.
During the high temperature process the coating more or less becomes one with the coated surface and it is not the conventional , brittle ceramic that ussualy comes to mind .It’s much tougher and won’t crack or flake off.On top of the base is a ceramic envelope available in five colors: white (often seen in race car from sixtiest), aluminium, cast iron (very popular ,especially with restorers, since it imparts an original dark cast iron appearance), titanium and black satin. The colors stay for a long time, unlike paint that burns almost immediately, or chrome that turns several shades of blue. Not only do coatings not discolor but it can also be hamared on and scratched without flaking off and without sacrificing any metal protection. Tha coating appearance is tha most often the selling point for many people, but the benefit of the coatings from a performance standpoint is worth of consideration. Coatings holds heat in the pipes, which in theory improves exhaust scavenging. Acceleratingthe gas velocity also means the cylinder heads run cooler ,which lowers the operating temperature of the engine. Also ,because surface temperature is reduced, less heat is radiated into the engine compartment, and underhood temerature come down.Lower underhood and engine water temperature mean the intake charge become more dense, which makes power. Since the manifold doesn’t radiate as much heat a components close to it ( altenator, starter) it will not see as much heat as it would with uncoated manifold.
Hipeco does most of its business with individual consumers, and the manifolds don’t need to be brand new to be coated.
Also matorcycles exhaust components can be coated.
